Everybody’s heard the expression, “letting off a little steam.” However, is it possible for humans to produce steam? Let’s dig into this a little deeper here.
Steam is basically vaporized water which has a temperature of about 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), which is the boiling point of water. Steam that is hotter than this is generally referred to as superheated steam. While you often think you see steam rise above a kettle when it boils, technically this isn’t true, as steam is invisible. What you’re actually seeing is the steam mixing with the cooler air to create very small drops of liquid water.

This vaporized water has been put to good use over the years as it’s been used to power engines and create energy when the steam’s expanded. Steam engines were often used to power items such as trains, ships, pumps, traction engines, trucks, and other types of vehicles. All of these items helped the Industrial Revolution take place in Britain in the 1700s.
A steam engine needs a boiler to operate as this is what turns the water into steam. The steam expands and contracts, and this action propels a piston or turbine blade. The piston or blade is then used to power the device or machine. Steam engines were very popular as they could work with any type of fuel to heat the boiler. However, most fires were burned with coal, wood, and oil. You may have seen many movies where the engineer kept adding coal to the fire in a steam locomotive to keep the train going.
Steam can also create a decent heating system in some instances when it’s used in piping, and boiler systems. Some types of steam turbines are still used for generating electricity and a high percentage of electric power in the US is generated by using steam and turbines. People often use steam at home as method of cooking food. It also makes an ideal way of cleaning carpets and other materials.
Steam can be quite dangerous as it can also be produced very quickly when water combines with a very hot substance such as molten metal. When this occurs, it’s known as a steam explosion. These explosions can cause major damage if they happen in populated areas. You should always be careful when working around steam as it can burn quite badly, even from a kettle.
